Meditation isn't the skill. Awareness is.

When most people think about meditation, they focus on the activity.
Sitting quietly.
Following the breath.
Repeating a mantra.
But I think we sometimes confuse the practice with the skill.
Meditation isn't the skill. Awareness is.
Meditation is simply the practice that helps us develop it.
Throughout the day, awareness shows up in small moments:
Noticing your attention has drifted.
Catching yourself before sending that email.
Realising you're reacting rather than responding.
Seeing a situation more clearly before making a decision.
Without awareness, we operate on autopilot and life's important moments can pass us by.
With awareness, we create choice.
The choice to pause.
The choice to listen.
The choice to respond rather than react.
One of the things meditation has taught me over the years is that my mind and I don't always want the same things.
My mind likes certainty.
My mind likes comfort.
My mind likes familiar routines.
Yet many of the most rewarding experiences in my life and career have existed outside of those preferences.
Awareness helps us notice that distinction.
Meditation is simply the practice ground.
The office is where the skill gets used.
Mind yourself,
Mike
